The Definitive 4-cam Book
Porsche Enthusiasts:
We are hard at work on the definitive book on Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, his 4-cam motor, and the 4-cam Porsche cars. The story of Furhmann's involvement with Porsche is told, and the history of the 4-cam motor in its various iterations is revealed. All car types - production and race cars - that received Fuhrmann's famous 4-cam motor are thoroughly examined.
To the extent possible, the book will trace the race history of each race car type and specific car. Every 4-cam equipped car and, with a few exceptions on the race side, every 4-cam motor is listed as well. You'll see many previously unpublished photos from the time when these 4-cam cars were originally raced (1954-1965).
On the production car side, all cars slated for 4-cams motors that didn't receive them are listed (not just the GT pushrod Speedsters), plus the S-90 GTs. And we'll include detailed information on all spare chassis.
Several mysteries will be resolved, including the following:
- What became of the spare 550 chassis? 718 chassis?
- What happened to Annie Bousquet's 550s?
- Which 550s did von Neumann own? Did one really come up from South America?
- What is the story of the 550 Buckelwagens and what happened to them?
- What is the story of the Le Mans and post Le Mans pre-production 550s?
Completion of this comprehensive volume is projected for late 2010 or early 2011. Roughly 500 pages in length and available in limited, numbered-edition format only, it is set to become the de facto standard reference on 4-cam cars and motors. Only as many as are pre-sold will go to print with a maximum set at 1,000*. All books will be numbered and author-signed. The price is expected to be $750 (plus shipping & handling) with.payment required approximately three months prior to printing.
We have received an enthusiastic response to this project from owners of our previous titles: Porsche Speedster Typ 540: Quintessential Sports Car and Speedster 50th Anniversary: Celebration of an Icon. The decision to go forward with the Furhmann 4-cam book will - to some extent - depend on your interest and commitment. Please contact me at your earliest convenience to reserve a copy. You will be proud to be one of the few to own a copy of this very special book.
